Hyundai Motor India is gearing up for a busy year ahead, with a series of new launches planned over the next twelve months. The Korean automaker is focusing on both budget-friendly and premium segments, with most upcoming models expected to be locally manufactured and priced under ₹15 lakh (ex-showroom). As part of this development cycle, several test mules have already been spotted on Indian roads, giving us early insights into what’s coming next.
Recently, three new Hyundai models were seen undergoing testing: the facelifted Hyundai Verna, the updated Hyundai Exter, and an all-new compact electric SUV. Here’s a closer look at what each of these upcoming vehicles is expected to offer.
Hyundai Verna Facelift: Sportier Design, Smarter Cabin
The sixth-generation Hyundai Verna was launched in early 2023, and the sedan is now preparing for its first mid-cycle facelift, expected to debut in the second quarter of the year, possibly as early as April. Spy images suggest that Hyundai is giving the Verna a more dynamic and upmarket appearance by borrowing design inspiration from the globally sold Hyundai Sonata.
Up front, the facelifted Verna is expected to feature a revised grille design, sharper LED headlamps, and a redesigned bumper that lends a sportier stance. While the overall silhouette is likely to remain unchanged, subtle tweaks to the lighting elements and body details should help the sedan look fresher and more premium.
Inside the cabin, the changes are expected to be more noticeable. Hyundai is likely to introduce a new dashboard layout with a curved panel that integrates a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Both displays are expected to run Hyundai’s latest ccNC software, offering a more refined user interface, enhanced connectivity features, and improved responsiveness.
Mechanically, the Verna facelift is expected to remain unchanged. The current petrol engine options and transmission choices are likely to be carried over, ensuring the sedan continues to offer the same balance of performance and efficiency.
Hyundai Exter Facelift: Subtle Styling Updates and Tech Boost
The Hyundai Exter, launched in mid-2023, is also expected to receive a mid-cycle refresh shortly after the Verna facelift. Spy shots indicate that Hyundai is focusing on cosmetic updates rather than a full redesign.
While the headlamps and tail lamps appear largely unchanged, the updated Exter is expected to feature restyled front and rear bumpers, along with a redesigned grille. One of the more noticeable updates seen in the spy images is the introduction of new 15-inch five-spoke alloy wheels. Hyundai is expected to continue offering 15-inch wheels, as it currently does not provide 16-inch alloys on the Exter, unlike some rivals.
The interior could see more significant upgrades. Reports suggest that Hyundai may introduce a new dashboard design featuring two larger displays powered by Android Automotive OS. These could include a 9.9-inch digital driver display and a 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, bringing the Exter closer to Hyundai’s premium offerings in terms of technology.
Under the hood, engine options are expected to remain unchanged. However, Hyundai may introduce a 5-speed AMT gearbox for the CNG variant, improving convenience for buyers looking for a more affordable and efficient urban vehicle.
New Hyundai Compact Electric SUV: HE1i EV
Perhaps the most exciting of the three test vehicles is Hyundai’s new compact electric SUV, internally codenamed HE1i. This model is expected to be Hyundai’s next major step in India’s growing EV market.
The HE1i is likely to be based on the same platform as the Hyundai Inster, which is already on sale in European markets. Spy images suggest a boxy SUV design, with a tall stance, high ground clearance, raised roof rails, and short overhangs. Futuristic design elements such as flush door handles, pixel-inspired LED DRLs, and matching tail lights are also expected.
Hyundai is reportedly planning to source LFP battery cells from Exide Energy Solutions in India, supporting localization and cost efficiency. The electric SUV is expected to offer a driving range of around 375 to 400 kilometres, making it suitable for both city use and longer commutes.
The HE1i electric SUV could make its official debut at Auto Expo 2027, scheduled between 4 and 9 February 2027, before going on sale shortly thereafter.
What This Means for Hyundai in India
With these upcoming launches, Hyundai is clearly strengthening its position across sedan, compact SUV, and electric vehicle segments. By focusing on updated designs, improved technology, and local manufacturing, the brand aims to stay competitive in an increasingly crowded Indian market.
