Hyundai has been spotted testing the facelifted version of the Exter for the first time, signaling that the subcompact SUV’s mid-life update is officially underway. Launched in India in 2023, the Hyundai Exter has quickly carved a niche for itself in the highly competitive entry-level SUV segment. The upcoming facelift is expected to arrive in the first half of 2026 and forms a part of Hyundai Motor India’s ambitious five-year product offensive announced in 2025.
Once launched, the refreshed Exter will continue to compete with rivals such as the Tata Punch and the Citroën C3X, both of which have been steadily gaining traction in the same price and size bracket.
2026 Hyundai Exter Facelift: What the Spy Shots Reveal
The test mule seen in recent spy images was partially camouflaged, hinting at subtle but noticeable design changes. Despite the camouflage, several familiar elements from the current model were clearly visible. The Exter facelift retains the existing projector headlights along with Hyundai’s signature H-shaped LED daytime running lamps at the front. Similarly, the rear LED tail-lights continue with the same H-shaped lighting signature, maintaining the SUV’s distinct visual identity.
That said, Hyundai appears to be working on revising the front grille and bumper design. These areas were heavily covered, suggesting updates aimed at giving the Exter a fresher and slightly more premium appearance. The rear bumper is also expected to receive mild cosmetic revisions.
Another notable update is the introduction of newly designed alloy wheels. These are likely to remain 15 inches in size but feature a refreshed design that adds a bit more flair to the overall stance of the vehicle.
Interior and Feature Upgrades Expected
While exterior changes may be evolutionary rather than revolutionary, the biggest updates are expected inside the cabin. According to earlier reports, the 2026 Hyundai Exter facelift will debut Hyundai’s next-generation infotainment system in India.
The updated cabin is likely to feature a dual-screen setup, consisting of a large 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment display paired with a 9.9-inch fully digital driver’s instrument cluster. What makes this setup particularly significant is that it will be based on the latest Android Auto OS, making the Exter the first mass-market car in India to run Google’s automotive software.
This system is expected to support over-the-air (OTA) updates for maps and software, along with compatibility for a wide range of third-party applications. Compared to the current infotainment unit, the new system should offer a smoother interface, faster responses, and a more connected experience overall.
Hyundai may also introduce new seat upholstery designs, revised interior color themes, and additional convenience features. On the safety front, more features could be added to keep the Exter competitive, although details are yet to be confirmed.
Powertrain Options: No Major Changes Likely
Under the hood, the Hyundai Exter facelift is expected to continue with the existing engine lineup. This includes the familiar 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine that produces 83hp. Transmission options are likely to remain unchanged, with buyers able to choose between a 5-speed manual gearbox and a 5-speed AMT.
Hyundai is also expected to retain the CNG option, which produces 69hp and is offered exclusively with a manual transmission. The current Exter CNG is available with both single-cylinder and dual-cylinder configurations, and both options could carry forward to the facelifted model as well.
No hybrid or turbo-petrol options are expected at this stage.
Pricing and Market Positioning
With the addition of new features and technology, a slight price hike is expected for the facelifted Hyundai Exter. Currently, the Exter is priced between ₹5.64 lakh and ₹9.61 lakh (ex-showroom). Post-update, prices could increase marginally to account for the upgraded infotainment system and added features.
For context, the Tata Punch is currently priced between ₹5.59 lakh and ₹10.54 lakh, while the Citroën C3X ranges from ₹4.95 lakh to ₹9.45 lakh (ex-showroom). Hyundai is expected to position the Exter facelift competitively to maintain its strong value-for-money appeal.
