Mahindra Scorpio-N and Thar Prices Increased from January 17, 2026

Mahindra has announced a fresh round of price hikes for its popular SUVs, the Scorpio-N and the Thar, effective January 17, 2026. The revised prices reflect increases ranging from ₹10,500 to ₹35,500, depending on the variant and powertrain. This update continues the broader trend of annual price revisions that have become common across the Indian automotive industry at the start of each calendar year.

With the new pricing in place, the Mahindra Scorpio-N now carries an ex-showroom price starting at ₹13.49 lakh and extending up to ₹24.52 lakh, while the Mahindra Thar range begins at ₹9.99 lakh. Nearly all variants of both models have been impacted by the revision.

Scorpio-N: Variant-Wise Impact of the Price Hike

Among the Scorpio-N lineup, the largest increase of ₹35,500 applies to the Z8L 4WD and Z8L 4WD Carbon variants. These trims are powered by the 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, making them the most premium and feature-rich offerings in the range.

In percentage terms, the base Z2 petrol-manual variant recorded the sharpest jump, with a 2.18% increase. Its price has moved up from ₹13.20 lakh to ₹13.49 lakh. Diesel variants across the lineup have generally become costlier by ₹20,000 to ₹35,500, with automatic transmissions attracting higher hikes than their manual counterparts.

Despite the increase, the Scorpio-N continues to offer a wide spread of variants and powertrain options, allowing buyers to choose between petrol and diesel engines, rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive, and manual or automatic gearboxes.

Thar Also Gets Costlier

The Mahindra Thar has also seen upward price revisions, although the company has not disclosed a detailed variant-wise breakup at the time of writing. Based on historical trends, price increases for the Thar typically range between ₹10,000 and ₹30,000, with top-spec diesel automatic and four-wheel-drive variants usually facing the steepest hikes.

The Thar currently spans seven variants and offers three engine options: a 1.5-litre diesel, a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol, and a 2.2-litre diesel. Depending on the powertrain, buyers can choose between manual and automatic transmissions, along with rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive configurations.

Reasons Behind the Price Increase

Mahindra had earlier suggested it would avoid routine January price hikes unless raw material and input costs rose significantly. The latest revision indicates that such pressures have indeed materialised. Factors such as rising commodity prices, currency fluctuations, and higher supply-chain costs continue to impact automaker margins, making periodic price adjustments increasingly unavoidable.

These hikes also follow a GST revision in September 2025, which had temporarily reduced Scorpio-N prices by ₹81,000 to ₹1.45 lakh depending on the variant. The January 2026 increase has effectively neutralised much of that benefit, leaving buyers with little net price advantage over the past few months.

Demand Remains Strong Despite Higher Prices

Both the Scorpio-N and Thar remain strong performers for Mahindra, regularly attracting waiting periods stretching several months. The Thar’s retro-inspired styling and off-road capability continue to draw lifestyle buyers and enthusiasts, while the Scorpio-N appeals to families seeking a rugged yet feature-rich three-row SUV.

The Scorpio-N competes in a crowded segment that includes the Tata Safari, Hyundai Alcazar, and MG Hector Plus, whereas the Thar operates in a more niche space with limited direct rivals, such as the Force Gurkha and the upcoming Maruti Jimny. Mahindra’s ability to sustain healthy order books despite repeated price hikes underscores the brand’s strong market appeal.

Impact on Buyers

Customers who booked either SUV before January 17, 2026, are expected to be charged the older prices, provided their vehicles are invoiced before the revised rates take effect. New buyers, however, will have to pay the updated prices, which, when combined with registration, insurance, and state taxes, significantly raise the on-road cost.

For example, the top-end Scorpio-N Z8L 4WD Carbon diesel automatic now carries an on-road price approaching ₹28–30 lakh in major metropolitan cities.

Outlook for 2026

Mahindra continues to expand its SUV portfolio with new models such as the XUV 7XO, BE 6, and XEV 9S electric SUVs, contributing to record retail volumes. Even so, the Thar and Scorpio-N remain central to the company’s sales and profitability. While the latest price hikes are modest in absolute terms, their cumulative effect may cause some prospective buyers to pause, especially as competition intensifies through 2026 with new and refreshed rivals entering the market.
